GST Invoice Format by Industry
The legal core of a GST invoice is the same in every trade. What changes is the detail each business adds - pick yours below.
What stays the same in every industry
Every tax invoice carries your name, address and GSTIN; a unique serial number and date; the customer's name, address and GSTIN where registered; the HSN code for goods or SAC code for services; the description, quantity and taxable value; the tax rate and amount split into CGST and SGST (intra-state) or IGST (inter-state); and the place of supply. For the field-by-field rules, see the GST invoice format guide.
Retail and trading
Mostly B2C bills to walk-in customers: item-wise lines with HSN codes, the CGST/SGST split, and a clean rounded total. Supplies to registered buyers switch to the full B2B format with their GSTIN.
Transport and logistics
Freight uses SAC codes, carries the consignment note, vehicle and route, and must say whether GST is payable under reverse charge - consistent with the e-way bill for the same trip.
Services
A service description and SAC code instead of a goods list, the period or milestone billed, and the place of supply that decides IGST versus CGST plus SGST.
Manufacturing and projects
B2B invoices where the buyer's GSTIN is mandatory, HSN codes at the required digit level, and stage or dispatch references. Larger sellers also generate an IRN under e-invoicing.
