What are HSN and SAC codes?

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is the international classification system for goods, maintained by the World Customs Organization and used by nearly every country. Under GST, every product you invoice carries an HSN code, and every service carries a SAC (Services Accounting Code). The code determines how the item is reported in your GST returns and signals which tax rate typically applies. SAC codes are always six digits and always begin with 99 — for example, 998313 is IT consulting and support services.

The 4 / 6 / 8 digit hierarchy

HSN codes are hierarchical: the first two digits are the chapter, four digits identify the heading, six digits the globally standard sub-heading, and eight digits the India-specific tariff item. For example, chapter 84 covers machinery, heading 8471 covers computers, and 847130 narrows it to portable laptops. A longer code is always more specific — but you can't invent one by truncating: a 6-digit code is only valid if it exists as a real entry in the official tariff.

How many digits do you need?

The mandatory minimum depends on your annual aggregate turnover (AATO). Businesses at ₹5 crore or more must use at least 6-digit codes on e-invoices and e-way bills. Below ₹5 crore, 4 digits is the minimum for B2B invoices. Exports require 8 digits. Because the e-invoice system is phasing out 4-digit acceptance, 6 digits is the safe floor for any business that will ever generate an e-invoice.

Why the right code matters

The government e-invoice portal validates every code against the official master and rejects invalid ones with error 2176 — "Invalid HSN code(s)". That rejection happens at the worst moment: while you're trying to issue a legally required invoice. A wrong code can also mean the wrong tax rate, misreported GSTR-1 summaries, and disputes over input tax credit. Pick the code once, store it on the product, and reuse it — our free invoice generator has an HSN/SAC field on every line item, and the GST calculator helps you verify the resulting tax.

GST rates shown here are a starting point

Where this finder shows a GST rate next to a code, it is the rate commonly associated with that classification. Actual rates can differ by sub-classification, exemption notifications, and periodic GST Council changes — always confirm the applicable rate for your specific product before invoicing.

Frequently asked questions

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is the international system for classifying goods. Under GST, every product on an invoice carries an HSN code that determines how it is reported and taxed. Codes exist at 4, 6, and 8 digit levels — the more digits, the more specific the classification.
HSN codes classify goods, while SAC (Services Accounting Code) classifies services. SAC codes are always 6 digits and always start with 99 — for example, 998313 is IT consulting and support services.

The government e-invoice portal validates codes against the official master and rejects invalid ones (error 2176 — "Invalid HSN code"). A wrong code can block e-invoice and e-way bill generation, so always pick a code that exists in the official master.
No — the rate shown is the rate typically associated with the code and is a starting point only. Rates can vary by sub-classification, exemptions, and notifications, so confirm the applicable rate for your specific product or service.
