The GST invoice format by industry shares the same legal core everywhere — your GSTIN, invoice number and date, customer details, HSN or SAC code, taxable value, and the CGST, SGST, or IGST split. What changes is the extra information each business adds: a retailer shows item-wise rates, a transporter shows the consignment and vehicle, and a consultant shows hours or a service description. This article shows the right format for each industry while keeping every mandatory field intact.
What changes between industries — and what doesn't
The mandatory fields on a GST tax invoice are fixed by law and do not change with your industry. Every compliant invoice must carry your name, address, and GSTIN; a unique serial invoice number and date; the customer's name, address, and GSTIN where registered; the HSN code for goods or SAC code for services; the description, quantity, and taxable value; the tax rate and amount split into CGST plus SGST for intra-state sales or IGST for inter-state sales; and the place of supply.
What changes is the layout and the optional extras that make the invoice useful for your trade. A shop wants a fast item-wise bill; a logistics firm wants the consignment and vehicle on the face of the document. For the field-by-field rules, see our GST invoice format guide, and confirm the mandatory fields on https://cbic-gst.gov.in.
GST invoice format for retail and shops
Most retail sales are to walk-in customers who are not registered, so these are B2C invoices and the customer GSTIN is usually blank. The format stays light and item-focused.
- Item-wise lines: product name, HSN code, quantity, rate, and amount for each item.
- Tax shown clearly: CGST and SGST split for a local sale, for example a Pune shop billing a Pune customer.
- Rounded total: a clean final amount, with any rounding shown as a separate line.
For high-volume counters, a consolidated daily B2C summary may suffice for small-value sales. The line between B2B and B2C billing matters here, so read our guide on B2B vs B2C invoices under GST.
GST invoice format for transport and logistics
Transport billing uses SAC codes (the service equivalent of HSN) and often interacts with the reverse charge mechanism, where the recipient pays the GST. The format carries consignment details on the invoice face.
- SAC code: for goods transport or courier services instead of an HSN code.
- Consignment details: LR or consignment note number, origin and destination, and vehicle number.
- Reverse charge note: a clear mention when GST is payable by the recipient under reverse charge, so a Nagpur transporter billing a registered factory shows it plainly.
Because the e-way bill and the transport invoice describe the same movement, keeping them consistent avoids disputes at checkposts.
GST invoice format for services and professionals
Consultants, agencies, freelancers, and firms bill services, so they use SAC codes and a service description instead of a goods list. A tax invoice for services should be raised within 30 days of providing the service.
- SAC code: for the specific service, such as legal, design, or IT consulting.
- Service description: what was delivered, the period covered, and hours or a milestone if you bill that way.
- Place of supply: drives whether you charge IGST or CGST plus SGST — a Bengaluru agency billing a Mumbai client charges IGST.

GST invoice format for manufacturing and wholesale
Manufacturers and wholesalers sell to other registered businesses, so these are B2B invoices where the customer GSTIN is mandatory and the buyer claims input tax credit from your invoice.
- Buyer GSTIN: mandatory, since the buyer needs it to claim credit.
- Accurate HSN codes: at the required digit level for each product, which matters for higher-turnover businesses.
- Batch and dispatch details: batch number, packing, and dispatch-from address where relevant for bulk supply.
Larger sellers may also fall under e-invoicing, where invoices are reported to the portal for an IRN. Confirm the HSN digit requirements and invoice rules on https://cbic-gst.gov.in.
A free template for every industry
You do not need a different software for each trade. The same compliant base — your GSTIN, a serial number, HSN or SAC, the tax split, and place of supply — works for retail, transport, services, and wholesale once you add the few extras your industry needs.
The simplest path is to start from a correct template and adapt it. Use our free invoice generator to produce a GST-ready invoice for any industry, then fine-tune the line items to match your trade.
